Yes, I do. I didn't use to and always found it odd when I encountered other people doing it.
Why did I start ? Well, I had girl friends who didn't know a 2 ton floor jack from a 1 1/2 ton bottle jack. That's how I started giving things names. So I named the floor jack "Orville" and the bottle jack "L'il Orville". Problem was that they were both the same color. (and she wasn't too memory retentive" but was better with names in a social sense. So those inanimate items became "crew members" in her thinking. The channel lock pliers are the "T Rex" of the tool box and likewise the large ball peen hammer is "the ol' man". When I met here she was referring to any of her cars as "car car".
When she purchased this Honda the instrument panel confused her as it was like a ball park organ with a couple tiers of instruments. When I mentioned it looked like the cockpit of a Russian Mig, that got her started and since then she refers to it as the "Fox Bat". and my Van (rig) is now the "Freighter".
What I have yet to understand is why only certain things, with no particular reason, come to get named and others don't. Then there's the instance where things that evoke her anger get referred to as a "hummer". (perhaps a substitute for a much more derogatory term)
Most people who know her find her charming and cute. It seems to be part of her charming nature that connects her with others so quickly.
