The truth about composting toilets in winter

Something worth thinking about since it's winter. learned this before but I found out the hard way that a composting toilet needs to stay warm to keep working correctly. because when the temperature drops the biological process slows down and you might end up with a mess that does not break down... Like how nature works. I added a small heater near the base and it fixed the issue but it uses more power than I expected. Great way to save water too if you can handle the extra maintenance. Has anyone here had issues with your setup freezing up or do you use a different system for your waste?

Funny enough... I learned that lesson the hard way when my vent fan pulled in too much cold air and basically froze the compost solid. Had to wrap the base in an electric heat blanket just to get things moving again. Definitely a learning curve that the glossy brochures don't tell you about. I started adding a bit more dry coco coir during the cold months to help soak up the extra moisture. Worked just fine.

Do you have to empty yours more often when it is cold outside?

Yep, temperature makes a huge difference, cold basically stalls the whole process. A lot of people underestimate how much steady warmth those systems need to stay functional.
