Building a tiny home on my co-parent's lot

I am thinking about moving into a tiny house to finally own my own place in an expensive city. My ex and I still get along great and she wants to buy a property where we can all live together. Instead of a duplex we are looking at a single family home with enough yard space for a tiny house in the back. This would let me have a custom home that fits my lifestyle while staying only fifty feet away from my child. My teen already spends a lot of time alone so I do not think the smaller space will change our relationship much. It feels like the best way to gain financial independence and stay close to my family. But I want to make sure the transition from a standard apartment to a small backyard house does not make my kid feel like they lost their room at my place.

Have you looked at local zoning laws to see if you need a permanent foundation for a backyard cottage?

Check if your utility connections like water and sewer can be easily extended from the main house.

Adding a dedicated sleeping nook with a door or heavy curtain can give a teen the privacy they need.
