When did you first start being interested in tiny homes? And think there may be a possibility for yourself?

I've been watching them since I first discovered TinyTumbleweed homes, and there is a place in TX that is/was building tiny homes with recovered wood and windows from old homes they carefully tear down and reuse. I'll need to take some photos to illustrate what I mean and share them here. They expand the imagination for what to call home.

Around 1979 I was working in a heavy industry and got to know one of the young women who also worked there. She was a self described farm girl from Illinois She had purchased some property and was wanting to build something.

Of the materials she had collected was a playground Dome kids would climb all over. The base was 20 ft wide and it stood about 8 ft tall. She was thinking of that for a roof structure and building walls to mount it on where it would look about like a barn silo. The plan was to cut wire screen or expanded metal sheets to cover the dome and then apply concrete to that like plaster. Then mop that with a silver roof coating like they use on house trailers.

I knew of a place where they sold corrugated metal utility buildings to Farmers and offered to take her there to see them. When she learned how affordable they were she was ready to buy one then and there and have them deliver and set it up. All she would have to do then would be to insulate and panel the interior. Later she would have to set up a cistern and septic system. A lot of things she would raid the dumpsters at work to salvage materials she thought she could use.

The unit she bought was about 20 ft long and 9 ft wide. Last I talked with her she was wanting to make a carport or patio with the Dome.

She sounds very independent and making do with what she had to work with. I admire that.

I watched HGTV a lot, that was the beginning of my dream of having one tiny house. finally, I have my own tiny house last year, and I can't be happier

Has anyone else watched YouTubes about Incredible Tiny Homes, they build practical to fancy tiny homes of various sizes. Watching them would be good to get ideas of what works if we were going to build our own tiny homes.

Sears catalog, that was my gateway drug. In late 60s, early 70s Sears catalog had a lot of camping and household things. As a child i would plan what i needed to furnish a life in a cozy space. Usually a cabover camper, travel trailer or something like a garage. Where i would often hang out.
My ideas for living space changed back and forth, but always stayed small ish

Don't you miss flipping through the Sears catalogs? Especially at Christmas. The internet and Amazon are great, but circling what you wanted for Christmas was really nice.

My Grandparents had some old catalogs missing a group of pages, when i was child. I realized why many years later when i did not have "enough" toilet paper in the outhouse.
