solar and eco-friendly heating ideas?

I'm finally making progress on my tiny home build and I'm at the point where I need to seriously consider heating solutions. We get some pretty chilly winters, and I'm trying to be as eco-friendly and self-sufficient as possible.

I'm really interested in hearing about your experiences with solar heating for tiny homes. What systems have you used, and what are the pros and cons? How do you supplement your heat on cloudy days or at night? I'm also curious about any passive solar design elements you've incorporated into your builds to keep things cozy without a huge energy draw. Any tips on window placement, insulation materials, or even color choices that make a difference? I'm trying to get things finalized for the colder months ahead, so any advice for the coming fall and winter would be a huge help!

I went with a combo setup, passive solar with good southern exposure and high R value insulation, plus a small wood stove for backup. On sunny days even in winter, the place stays toasty with just the sun

The hard truth is that solar alone will not cut it every day, especially in a real winter with cloudy skies. You need a backup that is dependable. Some tiny homes use small wood stoves, others run radiant electric or a heat pump. Just make sure you size that backup right, because being underpowered in January is miserable.

+1 @Sergei_Inventor What is important is having good insulation and not just relying on solar heating to do all the work. You might also consider south facing windows bringing in winter sun and thermal mass like stone or tile floors holding warmth.
