I am looking into moving into a tiny house because it seems much more relaxed parts of the country. I have heard that the local building officials are a bit more hands off when it comes to enforcing strict rules and ordinances on smaller dwellings. It feels like a good spot to try out a simpler lifestyle without the constant worry of being told to move your home every few months. But I really want to hear from people who are actually on the ground there to see if that reputation is actually true. Even in rural areas you still have to deal with things like waste disposal and getting a solid flat spot for your foundation or trailer. It would be great to know if the county is welcoming to tiny homes on wheels or if they prefer them to be on permanent foundations. Any suggestions?

The best thing you can do is talk to the local planning office in your area. They can explain if they’re more open or if they prefer permanent foundations.

I heard Lake County is a good area. Check areas where it's easy to get set up.

Reputation aside, the boots on the ground reality is all about utilities
even in the most relaxed rural spot, if your neighbors see a garden hose and an extension cord running to a trailer for a year, someone might call it in. Most counties are now okay with THOWs as long as you connect to an approved septic system
if you want to avoid being told to move, look for land that already has a permitted power pole or well
it makes the building department much happier to see you’re not camping permanently
