Small cabin kits

We're working on a small off-grid setup in Kansas. It's mostly flat land with strong winds and wild temperature swings. The plan is to start with a simple cabin for weekend stays, then maybe add a few more for friends and family down the line.

We're looking at prefab kits that can handle wind and insulate well for winter. Not going huge but something under 400 sq ft with a loft would be perfect. Budget's tight, but we want something that'll last. Has anyone had luck with kits that hold up well in open plains weather? What worked for you?

That's a great goal. A kit with a solid wood or structural insulated panel design is the way to go! These types of panels are built off site in a controlled environment so you get a tighter seal and more consistent insulation value than you would with a typical stick-built structure. Consider a heavier foundation is also something to to provide a stable base against the strong winds. Some companies specialize in kits with smaller footprints that are engineered to withstand extreme weather so checking their engineering specs for wind and snow loads is a smart move. Check out brands that highlight durability and a strong building envelope over fancy finishes you can add yourself later.

Since your budget is tight and you're going off-grid, for foundation, since you're in a flat, windy plain, the foundation is your most critical wind-resistance component. Ensure better insulation now like spending more for SIPs or spray foam, coz it will translate into smaller, cheaper off-grid power systems later, as you'll need less energy for heating and cooling. This is the best place to invest for a long-term off-grid setup.

yep, agreed on investing in insulation! Since you have huge temperature swings, think about thermal mass inside the cabin. Even something as simple as a heavy concrete floor pad or a rock wall near your wood stove can dramatically smooth out those day to night temperature swings, making your tiny HVAC system (or lack thereof) much more effective.
Also, be strategic with windows. Minimize glass on the north and west sides to cut down on bitter winter winds and summer heat gain, and maximize passive solar gain with larger windows facing south.
